I am working on my own backyard pond!

I had this bright idea that I wanted a small pond in my backyard! Now some people will put a great deal of planning and thought into a project like this,,, which I am guessing may just be a real good idea! But ohhh nooo, not me! lol   I had a spot where my grass has just never grown as well as other places, so obviously this would be the place to put the pond.

Well let me give you some background, I live on the side of a hill in the sandhills of nebraska,,, and we backfilled it with some good dirt after building our house, which we did ourselves and should be the subject of several hubs!!  As you can see by the pictures we put in a fence made out of old cedar posts that used to be in the ranch fences to create tiers of gardens.  Since most of these are close to 100 years old they do continue to rot and we replace the open areas.

Now so far as my lack of planning, I am going to create a small fake stream that will flow over the plaster piece you see in the picture, this will run through my garden and be connected at the top to a garden hose, which will be buried. I am not intending on messing with fish, as I don't want to have to tend to them all winter as well. I'll be putting in some lillies, put plants around the edges and it will primarily just be for looks and my own enjoyment.

I should have put the pond at the other end of my garden though, as i will now have to create a new way in and out of my garden as the entrance is just to the right of the picture and tilling over my fake stream will be a nuisance.

Other than that though, this was a fun fast project, I used materials I had on hand, some leftover slate from a different project, rocks I'd collected in wyoming, and plastic I had purchased several years ago.  Just be sure if you do this, to remember to measure the bottom and sides and add a foot on the outside to make certain your plastic dimensions are correct.

Enjoy!
